The first incident of note came in the 20th minute when Drogheda's John Lester was shown a yellow card.
The first attempt on goal came in the 29th minute. A mistake by Longford's Alan Murphy allowed Gary Cronin through but keeper Stephen O'Brien pulled off a fine save to turn the shot away for a corner.
Two minutes later O'Brien was on hand to deny his namesake Declan. Andy Myler had the visitor's best chance of the game in the 35th minute with a free kick.
Myler was fouled by Murphy just outside the box and his curling shot came of the post with Murphy on hand to clear the danger for Longford.
In the opening half Longford failed to produce any clear cut chances and had to wait until six minutes from the interval for their first corner.
The second half was much the same as the first with both sides creating very few chances. Dessie Baker nearly capitalised on a poor clearance by United keeper Rogers but defender Danny O'Connor was on hand to avert the danger.
In the 51st minute Barry Molloy had the visitors first chance of the second half but he pulled his shot wide of the target.
John Lester had an effort from 30 yards deflected out for a corner by Sean Dillon. Second half substitute Paul Keegan almost got on the scoresheet but he hit his volley wide of the Drogheda goal.
Keegan's presence caused Drogheda a few problems.
Four minutes from time Dillon had a chance to break the deadlock. The defender cut through the United defence but instead of squaring his shot to several of the Longford players in the box he blazed the ball over.
Tonight's United Park replay kick-offs at 7.45pm, with Longford aiming for their fourth straight win at the venue.
Town boss Alan Matthews is hopeful of a fifth victory. "We didn’t play particularly well on Sunday but we’re still in it," he said. "We have a good record there. There’s no way of explaining it, but we have no fear of going there and we hope the run continues."
