The Shelbourne striker started the month by helping Shelbourne to a 1-0 victory over St Patrick’s Athletic before getting on the score sheet himself as Shels beat Longford 2-0 and Finn Harps 1-0.
And on Halloween, he spooked Bray Wanderers as he netted a hat trick — his third of the campaign — to continue Shelbourne’s run of ten wins in 11 matches to keep their slim hopes of catching second place alive.
A cousin of Robbie Keane, Byrne was something of a late arrival to senior football.
He was playing with Firhouse club Colmcille's before he was spotted by Bray Wanderers in the summer of 1998, though 49 goals in five seasons proved he had the quality to compete in senior football.
His form also saw him earn a call up to the Ireland Under 21 squad although injury meant he missed out on a cap, forcing him to wait another few years for international honours.
When Bray were relegated at the end of the 2002/03 season, Byrne moved to Shelbourne where he bagged 21 League goals as the Tolka Park claimed the 2003 League title.
The following season, Byrne was again in fine form netting 25 League goals as Shelbourne once again lifted the title — with Byrne named PFAI Player of the Year for the second year running - while he also won his first international cap against Poland.
This season, despite Shelbourne’s patchy summer form meaning there is no historic third title in a row for Byrne to chase, the goals have continued to flow and it looks likely that he will claim the League’s top scorer crown for the third season in succession.
Byrne has previously won the eircom/SWAI Player of the Month award on two occasions in September 2003 and April 2004 while he has been short-listed for the 2003 and 2004 Personality of the Year award.
