FAI Cup quarter final draw

Last updated : 07 September 2006 By Gerry Ormonde

First out of the hat were Sligo Rovers - a club with a proud Cup tradition - and they were paired with the only non league side left in the competition - Killester United. The Dublin outfit had a bye in the last round after Dublin City went out of business.

Cup specialists Shamrock Rovers, who last won the trophy in 1987, will face an away trip to Athlone Town in the quarter finals. The midlanders had a good victory over Finn Harps in the last round and will not fear the current First Division leaders.

This season's Cup favourites Derry City will be at home to UCD. Both of these sides have met twice in the league so far this term, with scoreless draws being the outcome on both occasions. Something will have to give at the Brandywell, or possibly a week later at Belfield.

The final pairing will see St Patrick's Athlentic take on Longford at Richmond Park. The team by the banks of the Camac have been quietly fancied to do well in the competition this year. However, in Longford, they will face a side who have had a Cup pedigree in recent times, having being winners in 2003 and 2004.
