With Longford having the better of the exchanges, Pat Fenlon’s visitors took the lead on 42 minutes through centre back David Rogers. The former Tranmere defender, who signed a two-month contract at the beginning of last month, volleyed home Richie Baker’s right wing free kick from an offside position.
Town reserve goalkeeper Mick Dempsey, deputising for the injured Stephen O’Brien (rib), had to pick the ball out of his net again on 61 minutes as Ollie Cahill hammered home his first league goal of the season to seal the three points.
Elsewhere, a Danny O’Connor goal secured Drogheda a much-needed 1-0 home win over Derry, repeating their April win at the Brandywell, by the single margin. United leapfrogged the northern side in the table as a Gary Cronin corner provoked consternation in the visitors’ defence, allowing the former Bray wing-back O’Connor, to slice his ten-yard shot home through a forest of defenders on the stroke of half-time.
Limerick put their off-the-field difficulties behind them to record a comprehensive 4-0 win over Sligo. A brace of goals either side of the break from Stephen O’Flynn, the second a penalty, sees the Munster side rise to fourth in the First Division.
Pace-setters Finn Harps came from behind against Dundalk, to go two points clear, with winning goals from Jonathan Minnock and Johnny Kenny in a 3-1 win. Kildare County moved into second behind them as they held out for a 1-0 win over Galway at Terryland Park – the winner coming on 45 minutes from an own goal by United defender Michael Hartey.
