Setanta Cup: Linfield 2-0 Shelbourne

Last updated : 14 March 2006 By Gerry Ormonde

After a shaky start, Linfield asserted themselves on the game and took a deserved lead on 34 minutes when Michael Gault was on hand to slot the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.

Shelbourne started the second half brightly and enjoyed their first period of sustained pressure in the match, but all too often the final ball was lacking and Linfield were able to weather the storm.

Things got worse for the visitors on 53 minutes when goalkeeper Dean Delaney fluffed what looked to be a straight-forward cross and Peter Thompson pounced on the loose ball to score.

Delaney was forced off injured a minute later to compound the Reds' misery.

Shelbourne had late chances through Liam Kearney and substitute Bobby Ryan, but were unable to find a way past Alan McManus in the Linfield goal.
