eircom Premier Division:

Longford Town 0 Waterford United 1 (Sullivan 42)

It was hosts Longford who started the better however, with Alan Kirby’s fourth minute corner seeing the advancing Brian McGovern almost catch United ‘keeper Dan Connor out.

The visitors’ best chance of the half before Sullivan’s opening goal, came through Wayne Fitzgerald but the opening scorer against Cork last week failed to find the desired finish on 22 minutes.

Longford played an unfamiliar 3-4-3 formation and through a spell of pressure, should have taken the lead. Striker Sean Francis had a shot from five yards cleared off the line by Waterford’s Paul Leahy, nine minutes before the interval.
Brian Byrne, scorer of two against St Pat’s last Friday, had a 58th minute shot saved well by Connor, but Longford failed to muster anything after that. Sullivan struck when Waterford countered three minutes before half time. Ger McLoughlin went on the counter attack from midfield, breaking and releasing Neale Fenn into the right corner.

The former Tottenham striker fired an inviting ball across the Town penalty area and ‘keeper Stephen O’Brien could do nothing as Sullivan arrived to place his finish well beyond him.
