Premier Division: Dublin derby is vital to Championship chase

Last updated : 22 August 2003 By Dave Mervyn

Bohs are currently sixth in the table, having played fourteen games and mustered five wins which may seem poor for the reigning league champions of the Premier Division but they do have three games in hand on the five teams above them, with Pat's just three points ahead of the Phibsboro men in fourth.

A win for Stephen Kenny's side tonight would see them leapfrog St Pat's into fourth depending on how Longford fare at Belfield and pull them within five points of leaders Shelbourne.

Eamon Collins' Saints may well have Monday night's eircom League Cup on their minds with over €10000 up for grabs but they will have to do tonight without Charles Mbabzi Livingstone (knee) and the duo of Davy Byrne and Barry Prenderville who have both fallen vicitim to ankle injuries, perhaps due to the harder pitches of the summer soccer season.

Bohs seem likely to pair Glen Crowe with former Blackburn striker Robbie Doyle in attack, with their defence bolstered by the return of Thomas Heary and midfield welcoming back Bobby Ryan and Stephen Caffrey following injury lay offs.

ATOGB is tempted to go for a Bohs' win, but plumps for a 1-1.

BOHEMIANS
Founded: 1890
League Position: 6th
Form: WLLWW
Top scorer: Glen Crowe 8

Stat: Colin Hawkins took the eircom League soccer writers' Player of the month award for July earlier this week

ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC
Founded: 1929
League Position: 4th
Form: LWDWW
Top scorer: Tony Bird 12

Stat: The Emmet Road club are still in contention for two cups and the league title in what is their most successful season for some time. Monday night sees them contest for a trophy they last won in the 2000/01 season

Longford Town travel with an eight game unbeaten run under their belts to Belfield for what could turn out to be a dogged fight for the three points. Mick O'Donnell and influential midfielder Tony McDonnell return to the Students' squad and are both likely to figure in proceedings.

Daragh Sheridan and striker Barry Ferguson are back for the Flansiro faithful. Ferguson began the season in good form netting four times in the league before being forced onto the sidelines with injury. Former Bray Wanderers' midfielder Pip Keogh is serving a one-match suspension.

Longford took the spoils 2-1 in their earlier meeting this season at Flancare Park and whilst College can rely on Robbie Griffin to open up defences, the on-form Shane Barrett should be too much for UCD to handle at the back. ATOGB tips Longford to win 2-0.

UCD
Founded: 1895
League Position: 10th
Form: WWDLL
Top scorer: Robbie Griffin 4

Stat: UCD are unbeaten in the league at Belfield since the 9th of May when they lost 2-0 to Shelbourne. The Stillorgan venue has seen Paul Doolin's men score two wins and three draws in that time

LONGFORD TOWN
Founded: 1924
League Position: 5th
Form: WWDWW
Top scorer: Sean Francis 5

Stat: The last time Town lost on their travels was on the 4th of July at Turner's Cross, when they were hammered 4-1 by Pat Dolan's side

Cork City's form has been erratic and belies the fact that they sit second in the Premier Division table. Their home form has really brought them on with top scorer John O'Flynn finding the net on five occasions at Turner's Cross in five out of eight games at Turner's Cross this season.

Away losses to Derry, Drogheda United and most recently Waterford United, thanks to a controversial Vinny Sullivan penalty, have counted against them but Dolan will hope that O'Flynn can show the form which saw him net for the Republic U21 side against Poland (5-1) this week.

Former Gypsie Derek Coughlan could start at the back for the suspended Alan Bennett while Conor O'Grady returns to midfield action.

Harry McCue's Drogheda have won three of their last five League and Cup games, but will struggle to find the edge that saw them thrash Cork 3-1 at o2 Park on the first day of June.

A shoot-out between O'Flynn and Andy Myler says ATOGB, with City to prevail 3-1.

CORK CITY
Founded: 1984
League Position: 2nd
Form: LLDDW
Top scorer: John O'Flynn 13

Stat: Last season's fixture saw George O'Callaghan net the winner against United in a 1-0 October win. O'Callaghan, with four goals to his name this season, has failed to find the net in eight League games

DROGHEDA UNITED
Founded: 1919
League Position: 8th
Form: WWLLW
Top scorer: Andy Myler 7

Stat: United's last league win was their astonishing 4-2 home win against St Pat's on July 18th
