Poor defending costs Shels

Pat Fenlon's men fell to a Morten Fevang hat-trick, which was helped largely by some hesitant defending in the Shels back-line.

Fevang's first goal came on 28 minutes when Dave Rogers and Owen Heary failed to clear a corner and the Dane hammered home from close range.

More lapse defending by Shels allowed Fevang in for his second in the 41st minute, before the Odense hero took advantage of more hesitancy by Rogers to claim his hat-trick before the hour.

A foul on Glen Crowe earned the visitors a 53rd minute penalty, but Jason Byrne's spot-kick was saved and he also failed to score from the rebound. A foul on the Odense goalkeeper and subsequent yellow card will rule Byrne out of the return leg at Tolka Park next Sunday.

Fenlon will rue a series of missed chances as Shels took the game to their hosts, but ultimately it was poor defending which threatens to end Shelbourne's interest in Europe at this early stage.
