The Shelbourne striker, whose 25 Premier Division goals were key to his side’s title success in 2004, was voted top man by his fellow professionals in the PFAI poll.
The former Bray Wanderers striker has scored 45 goals in his two seasons at Tolka Park, and made his Irish senior international debut against Poland last April.
The Reds’ potency is to be further boosted by the acquisition of former Bohemians striker Glen Crowe, the only man to have come close to rivaling Byrne at the top of the scorers’ charts in the past two years.
Byrne – who lost out to defender Owen Heary in the Shelbourne Player of the Year award announced last weekend – polled higher than teammates Heary, Gary O’Neill and Jamie Harris, Cork City’s Kevin Doyle and Drogheda United’s Declan O’Brien to land the award.
