Shields 50

Goals from Jamie Duffy and Robbie Shields saw Shamrock Rovers stretch their lead at the top of the eircom League, First Division, as Pat Scully’s Hoops made it two wins out of two at St. Mel’s Park.

While delighted with having to delay the kick-off for 15 minutes due to the large crowd, Athlone weren’t quite so pleased to go in a goal down at the interval.

That came on 38 minutes when the Midlanders failed to properly defend Cathal O’Connor’s corner and Jamie Duffy sidefooted home at the back post to score for the second week running.

Shields increased Rovers lead on 50 minutes when shooting home off a post.
Town's night got worse six minutes later when skipper Padraig Moran was sent off for a second booking.

Murphy 50

Alan Murphy hit his first goal of the season to rubber-stamp Galway’s win at Terryland Park in the eircom League, First Division.

Ronan Frawley rose well to get his head to Philip Reilly’s corner with Pat Purcell turning the ball into his own net to give Galway a 33rd minute lead.

A great run by Mixie Harty then set up the clinching second goal five minutes into the second half when he fed Murphy who drilled his shot home from the edge of the area.
