Eircom League First Division:
MONAGHAN UTD 0
GALWAY UTD 3
Fortune 29, Geraghty 34, Murphy 80
---
Galway's fourth win in six games moves them maintain their push for a play-off spot, but it seems unlikely as they are still nine points adrift of fourth-placed Kidalre County.
Monaghan, lying second from bottom, looked the form side in the opening thirty minutes before Galway's Colin Fortune, scorer of an own goal last week against old club Athlone, hit a free kick past home keeper Muntanu.
Four minutes later the league's top scorer Alan Murphy played in Breen Geraghty for the striker to finish his first goal of the season from close range, holding off the challenge of left-back Declan McDonnell.
And Murphy notched his nineteenth of the season on 80 minutes, when he reacted quickest to a rebound in the Monaghan area. It's just a pity that the striker looks certain to remain in the First Division next season, unless a bidding war pipes up in the close season.
