First Division: Kildare continue push on top rivals

Last updated : 18 October 2003 By Dave Mervyn
In the First Division tonight, Kildare County moved into third with a 2-0 win over lowly Athlone, ahead of Bray Wanderers top-of-the-table clash with Finn Harps tomorrow afternoon.

Mid-table Sligo Rovers hit three past second-from-bottom Monaghan at the Showgrounds, with Davy O’Brien hitting United’s sole reply in their third loss on the trot. One place below Sligo remains Cobh Ramblers who struggled to a 3-2 victory over Kilkenny. Goals from Kieran O’Reilly, David Moore and Robert Brosnan gave them their first win since the end of August.

There must be something in the air when Galway United and Dundalk meet. Nine goals have been scored in their last two meetings, and every one by the County Louth side. Trevor Anderson’s Lilywhites put four past Galway at Oriel Park in July and took that form to Terryland Park last night.

Sixth-placed United’s play-off hopes were dented as the visitors went three up before the break. Ciaran Kearns added a fourth before striker Keith Carty netted his second on 87 minutes to complete a 5-0 rout.
