eircom League First Division:
Galway United 1 (Foley 83) Athlone Town 1 (Fortune og 37) FULL-TIME
Former Longford Town centre-half Kieran Foley rescued a point for Tony Mannion’s Galway in the eircom League First Division tonight against tenth-placed Athlone Town.
It was Galway's TWELFTH draw of a 24-game season so far.
Jimmy Greene’s midlanders have now gone seven games unbeaten, but should have had their fifth win secured as former Town midfielder Colin Fortune directed a loose ball into his own net eight minutes before the half-time break, to give Athlone the lead at Terryland Park.
Galway, who bowed out of the FAI Cup at the semi-final stage last Friday against Longford, pressed for an equaliser and finally got one through Foley as he popped up on 83 minutes to seal a point.
Galway have maintained their sixth position in the Division, with Athlone leapfrogging Dundalk, who have a game in hand, into ninth place.
