FAI CUP THIRD ROUND:
GALWAY UNITED 2 (Murphy 17, 84)
DERRY CITY 1 (Holt pen 9)
Dermot Keely’s side began with Liam Coyle on the bench but the omens were good when striker Michael Holt scored a penalty on nine minutes following a foul by United defender Michael Quirke on Paddy McLaughlin.
That lead lasted all of eight minutes though as the Westerners’ top scorer Murphy played a one-two before squeezing his shot past Derry stopper Alan Gough. Murphy saw another shot cleared off the Derry line on 68 minutes before Quirke went from villain to hero with a goal line clearance of a Paddy McLaughlin header.
With six minutes remaining, the home side earned a spot kick as City centre back Mark McChrystal handled a rebound from Barry Moran’s shot. Murphy made no mistake with the penalty for a famous win.
