Rovers took the lead on 67 minutes when veteran Tony Sheridan took a corner kick from the right which Jason McGuiness met with a powerful header that Waterford keeper Pat Holden could only parry and Ciaran Foley was on hand to sweep the ball into the net from six yards.

Rovers almost went further in front on 76 minutes when Sheridan hit a dipping left foot volley that flew inches over the crossbar and Waterford substitute Paul Crowley almost got the equaliser in the closing minutes with a near post header but the ball dribbled wide of the far post.
