Longford started the brighter and almost took the lead on six minutes when Gary Cronin jumped high to meet a John Martin cross from the right the ball but, just as he made contact, UCD's Stephen Hurley arrived on the scene to clear the danger.
Longford almost fell behind after 22 minute when a free kick from Hurley deflected off the wall and went just wide with Stephen O'Brien in the Town goal stranded.
The first chance of the second half fell to Dessie Baker in the 60th minute when he fired in a shot from 25 yards but his effort went straight into the arms of UCD goalkeeper Darren Quigley, who pulled off the save of the night 10 minutes later with an excellent one handed stop to deny a Cronin shot from the edge of the box.
UCD missed a great chance to take all the points when they were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute. O'Brien pulled Pat McWalter down in the box but Robbie Martin smashed the spot kick against the cross bar and the rebound was cleared.
This match was a dress rehearsal of the meeting between the same two sides at Flancare Park in the third round of the FAI Cup on August 27.
