Athlone Town 0 Bohemians 4
Grant 15
Ward 39, 41, 70

Stephen Ward scored a hat-trick as Bohemians cruised into the second round of the eircom League Cup with this all too easy win at St. Mel's Park.

Tony Grant headed the Dubliners in front after Barry Ferguson knocked down John Paul Kelly's free-kick for the lead goal on 15 minutes.

Ireland under-21 international Ward ended the game as any sort of contest with a quick-fire brace shortly before half-time.

Ward sidefooted home on 39 minutes after Robbie Forde in the Athlone goal had made a double save from Aidan O'Keeffe and Grant.

O'Keeffe then set up Ward's second two minutes later from Kelly's cross.

Ward completed the rout with his third goal of the night on 70 minutes.

Dublin City 2 Kildare County 1
Collins 27 Delaney 85
Freeman 90

David Freeman hit a last minute winner to prevent extra-time at Dalymount Park in the eircom League Cup.

Derek Delaney had levelled for County on 85 minutes when Vikings' keeper David Conroy could only parry a shot from Dave Mulcahy.

But Freeman struck on 90 minutes after David McGill shot came back off the bar.

Vikings took the lead on 27 minutes when Robbie Collins headed home from ex-County defender Damien Brennan's cross.

Cobh Ramblers 2, Waterford United 0
Murray 59
Breen 65

One of Waterford United's former players, centre-back David Breen, played a significant role in their defeat at St. Colman's Park where his new club Cobh Ramblers caused a mild upset in the eircom League Cup.
Breen scored Cobh's second goal in the 65th minute when he stretched his leg to deflect a free from Dave Warren into the Waterford net.

Cobh had jumped in front in the 59th minute and again the goal followed a free. This time it was Alan Carey who drove the ball into the penalty area and Dave Murray beat goalkeeper Shane Dunphy with a glancing header.

Waterford, of the Premier Division, had marginally the better of the opening half. Chances were plentiful with Waterford operating from a 4-3-3 formation.

They were close after just five minutes when Paul McCarthy was narrowly over with a powerful shot from 25 yards. Alan Carey did better for Cobh with a left-foot shot that was on target in the 28th minute and goalkeeper Dunphy was forced to make a good save.

Manager Michael Kerley gave Dunphy a start with regular goalkeeper Jimmy Fyffe on the bench and the replacement had a good first half. He saved well from Willie Bruton in the 34th minute, just after Brendan Hughes had put a header over at the other end when he might have scored.

Cobh now go into a draw with Cork City, Kilkenny City and Limerick for second round matches.

Cobh Ramblers: McCarthy; Carey, Murray, Breen, Falvey; Yelverton, Barrett, Warren, Mulconry; Brosnan, Bruton. Sub: Murphy for Brosnan 60.
Waterford United: Dunphy; Flynn, Deans, Hughes, Young; McCarthy, Grant, Hawkins; Colfer, Doyle, Fraher. Subs: Polewczak for Colfer 62; O'Shea for McCarthy 79.

Longford Town 4, Mayo League 0
Cronin 24
Gough 61
Murphy 68
Prunty 82

Longford Town had little difficulty in disposing of a gutsy Mayo League side in this Eircom League Cup game in Flancare Park.

The home side hit the front in the 24th minute. Gary Cronin volleyed home the opener after being out through by Sean Prunty.

Longford's second goal, in the 61st minute was a real cracker. Alan Kirby flicked the ball into the path of Stephen Gough and a sublime strike from the former Shamrock Rovers player whizzed past Mick Wallace in the visitor's goal.
Local lad Gary Murphy added a fortuitous third just seven minutes later. His speculative effort benefited from at least one deflection before completely deceiving Wallace while Sean Prunty added a 4th goal eight minutes from time.
