Derry Advance To League Cup Final

Second-half strikes from two-goal Gareth McGlynn and former Limerick favourite Stephen O'Flynn booked the Candystripes ticket to the final.

McGlynn slotted home in the 56th minute following an incisive run and cross on the right from Pat McCourt.

O'Flynn doubled his side's advantage four minutes later after Mark Farren's low drive was parried into his path by Limerick keeper Austin O'Neill.

McGlynn then put the matter beyond dispute in the 69th minute with a classy shot from inside the area.

The hosts held their own in the first half and almost went in front inside the opening five minutes, after Paul Rose ghosted around two defenders only to be thwarted by a top-class save from Patrick Jennings.

And Jennings denied the Blues a consolation deep into stoppage-time with a brilliant one- handed save from John Lester.

Defender Clive Delaney went closest for the visitors in an up-tempo first period with a towering header from a Killian Brennan cross which flew inches wide.

Speaking after the match City boss Stephen Kenny said he was delighted with the win and was looking forward to renewing rivalries with Shelbourne in the final.

Kenny said: 'The lads worked hard and we took our chances but fair play to Limerick,
they asked a few questions of us in the first half.

'We are now looking forward to meeting Shelbounre in the final and it should be an entertaining game of football.'.

The winners of the 2006 League Cup final qualify automatically for next season's Setanta Sports Cup.
