Cork City Cruise Past Sligo

Richardson saw his Cork side advance
Cork scored twice in the second half against a ten-man Sligo as their good football and constructive play finally took a toll of a hard-working Sligo defence. Once full-back Kupono Low was shown the red card in the 51st minute, Sligo were left with an impossible task.

Cork’s dominance of the game was illustrated by the first-half corner count of 9-1 in their favour but they were shocked as Sligo took advantage of their only corner to jump in front in the 41st minute.

Cork knocked the corner clear of the penalty area but when the ball was quickly returned by Kudozovic from the right-hand touchline Cork defenders were caught advancing and they left three Sligo players un-marked at the far post.

Paul Brown’s header looked good but goalkeeper Michael Devine made a marvellous save to claw the ball away. He had no answer, however, when the rebound fell for Kupono Low to drive it home from 12 yards.

Cork looked agitated for the only time in the match but an equalising goal in the first added minute of the opening half eased their worries. A left wing corner from Neale Fenn was headed home at the near post by centre-back Dan Murray.

Low went from hero to villain when, as the last defender, he pulled down the sprinting Roy O’Donovan in the 51st minute and Cork worked persistently in search of the openings they needed.

They finally jumped in front in the 78th minute when John O’Flynn — who suffered a suspected broken nose in a first-half incident — knocked the ball over the line after O’Donovan had again out-paced the defence and clipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper, John O’Hara.

It was O’Donovan who again punched an opening in the 83rd minute. This time he was tumbled by Rafael Cretaro as he raced into the penalty area and George O’Callaghan hammered home the resultant penalty kick.
