Under 16's: Switzerland 1 Ireland 1

Last updated : 01 October 2005 By Gerry Ormonde

Switzerland were under attack by Vincent Butler’s side straight from the kick-off with Crumlin United’s Conor Clifford breaking down the wing and crossing for Ian Daly to head the Irish in front after only 20 seconds.

Switzerland were the better side for most of the first half but thanks to some super saves by Irish keeper Kieron Thorp they failed to get an equaliser.

The 2nd half began frantically with both teams playing some great football. Irelands defence was eventually breached 3 minutes after half time when a swift Switzerland attack yielded an equaliser.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages of the game but were forced to settle for a draw in the finish.

Republic of Ireland Manager, Vincent Butler said that he was extremely happy with the result and the performance of his players in both games against a very strong Switzerland side.
