Under 15's: Netherlands 3 — 1 Rep. of Ireland

Last updated : 15 December 2005 By Gerry Ormonde

The Netherlands opened the scoring on 17 minutes against the run of play when striker Latupeirissa ran on to a through ball from what looked suspiciously like an offside position and slipped the ball into the net.

The Republic of Ireland were unlucky not to equalise after 20 minutes when Aaron Doran’s shot amazingly stayed out after hitting both posts and the crossbar.

The Irish were awarded a penalty after 36 minutes after a clumsy challenge at the edge of the box. Home Farm’s Paul Murphy stepped up and slotted the ball past the keeper.

The Netherlands were ahead three minutes after half time when striker Karin broke through the Irish defence and was fortunate to score when his shot was half saved by Irish keeper, Ger Hanley.

Karin was on the score sheet again after 60 minutes when his deflected shot crossed the line despite the despairing efforts of Hanley.

The game was played in front of an impressive crowd of vocal Irish supporters who travelled to Zeist to support Vincent Butler’s side.

Vincent Butler said after the game, “It was an excellent performance from our squad which is in fact the first time they have played together. The 3-1 score line wasn’t a fair reflection of the game in terms of overall performance from our players.

“We had the majority of possession but The Netherlands were incredibly quick on the break”

The Netherlands will host The Republic of Ireland in the 2nd Friendly International at the Dijnselburg Sportcomplex on Thursday 8th December, Kick-Off: 13.30 hrs (local time)
