Last updated : 23 October 2004 By Barry Landy

After the excitement of the 4 – 0 win over Andorra on Monday last, the Republic of Ireland’s Under 19 team came unstuck against hosts, Cyprus, in the UEFA Championships First Qualifying Phase in the GSZ Stadium in Cyprus today.

The home team went in front on 12 minutes and although playing well Ireland could never take their chances. Sean McCaffrey’s charges enjoyed a lot of possession and although John Paul Kelly (Liverpool) and Paul McShane (Manchester Utd) came close, the home keeper made a number of good saves to deny the Irish.

In the other game in the Group, Russia beat Andorra 5 – 0.

Ireland face Russia in the final game in the group in the Tsirio Stadium on Friday, Kick Off 1 pm Irish time.
