Uefa Under 17 Championship, First Phase qualifers: Group 3 -

Germany 1 (Tyrala 38) Republic of Ireland 1 (Stokes 68)

Stokes equalised to give the Republic every chance of qualifying out of Group 3 of this week's UEFA U17 Championship First Phase qualifiers.

The 16-year-old Dubliner, who has trained with the first-team Gunners on several occasions, dug out a point for Sean McCaffrey's side on 68 minutes, as he beat goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann with an unstoppable 20-yard finish.

Borussia Dortmund's Sebastian Tyrala had given the Germans the lead in the 38th minute, when volleying home Fabio Dell'Era's right-wing cross from close range.

Leeds United midfielder Robert Bayly almost headed the Republic in front three minutes after Stokes' strike, but Faehrmann was alive to the danger. The Schalke stopper also denied Alan Judge, a son of former Bray Wanderers captain Dermot Judge, helping his strike onto the crossbar in the 54th minute.

The Irish, who drew 1-1 with Iceland on Thursday, face a must-win clash with Lithuania in Grabow on Monday. The Baltic side drew 2-2 with Iceland in today's other Group 3 game.
