Zidane quit rumours confirmed

After rumours were floated about this morning in the French daily L'Equipe, coach Raymond Domenech has backed the scribings with a statement issued just hours ago.

The 32-year-old Real Madrid playmaker ended his international career at Euro 2004, and follows in the footsteps of former skipper Marcel Desailly and defenders Lilian Thuram and Bixente Lizarazu, who all called it quits after this summer's major tournament. France were eliminated from the championships by eventual winners Greece, at the quarter final stage.

It marks the end of what can be termed as a golden period in French football, after wins at the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championships for Les Bleus.

Domenech said: "Zidane stops his international career here. I regret it very much because I would have liked him to continue but he had already decided about it."

"He thought about it but now I need to deal with that and would like him to help the young players." Zidane was a three-time winner of the FIFA World Player of the year award. He made his debut in 1994 and went on to amass 93 caps.
