Johnny Giles thinks Venables would be a good choice for the job as he has experience and commands respect in the game. Before news of McClaren and Venables sacking from the FA Giles spoke with Newstalk's Breakfast Show
He Said
"I think he'd be another good candidate and he's going to be available anyway because I think the FA will get rid of both McClaren and him.
"He's proven himself in the past. If you look back on his career, he's had a long career, and like anyone who's had a long career, he's had a patchy career.
"He's had some good success and he's had a few jobs not so good, but overall he'll definitely be a candidate for the job."
Venables guided England to the semi-finals of Euro 96 and managed Australia who lost out to Uruguay in a World Cup qualification play-off when he was in charge.
Kevin Doyle feels Venables would be perfect for the role to lead Ireland into the next World Cup
He said
"Terry is experienced internationally, which is what the FAI are looking for in terms of having been there and done it. After Steve Staunton they got criticised because he didn't have experience, so I think they're looking for someone with lots of experience now.
"Venables has been around a long time, he got England to the Euro 96 semi-finals and they got beaten on penalties. He's done well with all the clubs he's been at as well so it would be exciting if he got the job."
Eamon Dunphy thinks the FAI would be mad and should not touch Terry Venables "with a bargepole".
Dunphy wrote in his Irish Daily Star column
"Do we want England's cast-off? Venables was sacked yesterday for his role in England's disastrous Euro 2008 campaign and it means he still hasn't managed to spend over two years in any of his last seven jobs in football.
"But Venables has this Teflon tendency to deflect all criticism away from him. Steve McClaren was a disastrous appointment by the English FA but Venables's fingerprints are all over a lot of the low points of the manager's tenure."
Dunphy continued
"If you want to know why the FAI should not touch Venables with a bargepole, then you only have to look at the way he spent the first half at Wembley against Croatia in the royal box hobnobbing with Britain's Prince William. Remember, England were 2-0 down at the time.
"But that sums up Venables. An A-List celebrity with his fondness for singing on chat shows but, these days, he's a Z-List manager."
Whatever happens you know with the FAI nothing will be straighforward and are in total contrast with the English FA who didn't drag out McClarens sacking but got the job done nice and quickly. Venables is the top target and like or hate him looks certain to be chosen as our new manager.
