He, as chief coach, was responsible for developing the team, dictating tactics and selecting the squad while his former international colleague, Oliver Bierhoff, acted as manager and took responsibility for all other duties in accordance with the Continental system of management.
The German FA were supported by such a powerful figure as Franz Beckenbauer, who headed up the World Cup organising committee, in their efforts to persuade Klinsmann continue in office.
Ireland will play Germany in their opening game in the European Championship in Stuttgart in September.
And the Irish team manager, Stephen Staunton, said: “The German side impressed everyone at the World Cup and the country is still on a high having hosted a really successful tournament”.
“The change at the top doesn't alter the fact that they have a really strong squad including some of the stars of the World Cup”, he added.
“Germany have one of the best teams in the world, they have the competition's top goalscorer and they were narrowly beaten by the eventual World Champions in the semi-final.
“We face a huge task in our first qualifying match on their home patch but we must concentrate on our preparations and ensure we give everything on the day”, Staunton said.
“Germany will also be wary of us and while they may be ninth in the world, they won't want to slip up against a team ranked 39th and fourth seeds in the group”, he added.
