Frank Stapelton knows how it feels to put on the green jersy. He donned it 71 times from 1976 until the last friendly before Italia 90 against Malta. He also knows the pride he felt when playing for his country and made sure he was available for every game by insisting he get a clause in his Man United contract after his move there from Arsenal.
The current Stephen Ireland fiasco must puzzle the proud Dubliner but he feels he can help. He has been recruited as a scout for the Irish set-up and said the he and Brady will try and sit down with the young Corkman.
He told the Evening Herald
"It depends on what the lad wants to do and it's his decision but I hope he will play for Ireland again, and if I can do something to get him back I will."
"There hasn't been a meeting with the lad yet but I think one is planned. Maybe if myself and Liam Brady can sit with him over a cup of tea for five minutes we could convince him what international football really means."
He feels that without international football Stephen Ireland will not develop fully.
He added
"Stephen Ireland is a very talented player and if he was available, I'm sure he would be a great addition to the squad," "But he's also very young and is still inexperienced. I'd like to think myself or Liam could explain this to him just what it means to play for your country. Stephen might not realise it now but it is the pinnacle of your career, to represent you country.
"If you want to be a better footballer you need to be playing international football, I have no doubt about that and I know an international career can improve already good players."
