St Patricks Athletic steered themselves into a last game showdown with one of the big guns in Europe standing in their way. But they could have failed where many Irish sides have done before when the visitors hit the front on 63 minutes. Elfsborg player Stefan Ishizaki ghosted past Pats defence to score.
The home crowd responded as St Pats looked for an equaliser, but they looked out as the clock ticked towards full-time. Then four minutes from the end Jason Gavin scored with an effort which cannoned past Wiland via a slight deflection.
Elfsborg were out when St Patricks top scorer Mark Quigley helped the Inchicore side into the last qualifying round as he confidently rounded the keeper.
St Patricks will face German side Hertha Berlin in the last qualifying game for the group stages proper
