Shay Given out

Giovanni Trapattoni has lost the services of the experienced netminder Shay Given for his first 2 games in charge. The Donegalman has been missing from the Newcastle team for the last month and a half. He had surgery over three weeks ago on his troublesome groin but his season is over.

Given had hoped to be fit for the end of the season and Giovanni Trapattoni's training camp and his first 2 games in charge.

Newcastle Boss Kevin Keegan said

"Shay will be fit by the end of the season and he'll train with us for the last week or ten days,". "But there's no sense for him to play a match.

"He needs to know by the end of the season that he's fit and can go away and come back for pre-season with his problems behind him. I think that for him will be a massive relief."

It comes as a blow to Given who's serious injury problems started when he ruptured his bowel in a horror collision with Marlon Harewood last season while playing against West Ham. It will also be a big dissapoinment for the incoming regime as they assess their squad and best players.
