Roy Keane to quit football in 2006

Alex Ferguson recently said that Roy Keane will be remembered in 500 years time.

But will it be for good reasons? Keane said in his autobiography, presumabably to earn himself yet more money, that he intentionally fouled Alf Inge Haaland for revenge in the Manchester derby. Alf Inge Haaland no longer plays football.

Keane has 62 international caps but there is no doubt that the most lasting international memory the United man will leave is one that was not done on the pitch.

On the eve of the 2002 World Cup in Saipan, Roy Keane walked out on his country for petty reasons including bibs and goalkeepers in training sessions. No act has divided Ireland as much since the Civil War.

For some people Roy Keane is a hero. The greatest player of his generation. For others he is an overpaid overhyped thug who has no desire to represent the Irish people at World Tournaments.

If he retires in 2006 as he plans, his last football will be in the 2006 World Cup, if Ireland qualify. That's if he actually decides to play.
