Reid apologises for Staunton reaction

The 35-year-old did exactly that earlier this week, amid criticism of his recent performances for Coventry City - the club he joined in August 2003.

The Drogheda-born defender came to the end of his tether during the week as he was heard to utter an obscenity in the direction of fans during the Sky Blues' 4-1 midweek defeat at QPR.

Staunton's manager Peter Reid has insisted Staunton should have used the experience of his 102 international caps to avoid the confrontation at Loftus Road.

Reid said: “Players shouldn’t react to fans in any way. You want the supporters to support you, but they pay their money to criticise as well and as professionals we’ve got to accept that. If the fans were let down in any way, I’d just like to apologise to them. I can tell my players how to react but you can’t tell supporters – as long as it’s not offensive, it’s their right to criticise.”
