The West Bromwich Albion man has been unable to win a place in the Premiership side’s starting line-up since promotion to the top flight, and he joined Burnley on loan last month.

His initial spell at Turfmoor came to an end after Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Millwall, but manager Steve Cotterill, who also worked with O’Connor during the pair’s time together at Stoke City, was quick to agree an extension with West Brom counterpart Bryan Robson.

The 25-year-old Wicklow man, who has appeared in all six of Burnley’s Championship games since his move north, will now stay on at the club until January 22nd.

While in League 1: Tranmere Rovers midfielder Jason McAteer admits that manager Brian Little was right to rest him for the recent league matches against Blackpool and Milton Keynes Dons.

The Wirral club are mounting a sustained promotion challenge in Coca-Cola League One, with successive wins over the struggling pair enough to lift them to second place in the table, four points behind leaders Luton Town.

With big clashes with fellow promotion hopefuls Bournemouth and Hull City to come over the next fortnight, club skipper McAteer was given an opportunity to rest over the past two weekends.

He said: “No-one is happy when they are left out. I still want to play in every game, as I have always done. But it is probably a good idea to rest me. You have to approach things sensibly.

“We sat down with the manager and spoke about what he was going to do. We have the strength in the squad to do this. Ranks [Mark Rankine, McAteer’s fellow central midfielder] and I are in our 30s. We have Danny [Harrison], a terrific player with fresh legs, who can come in and do a good job.
