O'Brien confident of Toon partnership with Woodgate

Next Saturday's eagerly awaited visit of Manchester United to St James' Park is playing heavily on O'Brien's 24-year-old mind at present following his second half cameo at Lansdowne Road last night.

'Myself and Joanthan have a solid understanding', he told teamtalk.com, 'I want to play and I'm playing with Joanthan at the minute.'

'There are only 11 places up for grabs, with two at centre-half and we do have some good centre-halves at the club.

'I want to be playing Premier and Champions League football like everybody else in the squad, but we did all right in Belgrade and all right against Leeds.

'The two goals at Elland Road came from mistakes and you can't blame the two centre-halves, so I'm glad to be playing.

'I'm getting to know Jonathan and I think this is a partnership that can flourish and go from strength to strength, particularly as we're still both young.'

'I don't get talked about that much, but what I take from it is that some of these players that are being talked about are now 30 to 35,' explained the former Braford man.

'I've only been doing it since I was 22 and hopefully I will be regarded as a top centre-half one day.'
