No goals as Irish hold Poles

Kerr, who endured a staggering ELEVEN withdrawals before his side travelled to Poland on Monday, saw his side earn a fourth draw in 14 games since the 50-year-old Dubliner took over from Mick McCarthy 15 months ago.

Lacking the quality to hold onto possession, the Republic struggled in a first half of cat-and-mouse football. In particular, front players Alan Lee and Clinton Morrison failed to impose themselves on the game, and had little in the way of supply from an ineffective tandem of Liam Miller and Mark Kinsella.

Perhaps Roy Keane had the best idea when withdrawing from the travelling party, as this friendly was certainly one to forget - at least for the 18,000 plus attendance.

The Poles' first shot in anger, after 38 minutes, saw the game's best midfielder Sebastien Mila test Shay Given from 25 yards. Cardiff striker Lee had Polish stopper Jerzy Dudek scrambling across his goalmouth with a well-improvised bicycle kick in the 35th minute, which was to prove the visitors' best chance of the half.

Given, who had difficulty with his goalkicking throughout, had a nervous moment on 51 minutes when he failed to control a back pass, but substitute Andrzei Niedzielan ballooned the chance behind.

Kerr brought on young talents Alan Maybury and Graham Barrett into the final half-hour, but both had little impact. Fire brand defender Tomasz Hajto fired in a dipping volley just over the bar in the closing stages, as Ireland introduced Blackburn's Jonathan Douglas, Newcastle defender Andy O'Brien, goalkeeper Nicky Colgan, and also gave a run-out to Shelbourne striker Jason Byrne - a cousin of Robbie Keane, and 2003 eircom Premier Division top scorer.

The Irish held on for a deserved draw, seeing the side remain unbeaten in 2004, and most importantly handing a hatful of young players the experience of playing at a noted international venue.
