Morrison Aiming To Win Against The Dutch

The 27-year old Crystal Palace player has a burning desire to help the Republic reach the European finals in Switzerland and Austria. He was part of the Irish squad that featured in the 2002 World Cup but did not get to play in any of the four matches.

“I didn't manage to get on the pitch during the World Cup in Japan and Korea, so I really want the chance of playing at a major Championship finals” he said.

“Wednesday's game against Holland is all about getting the team gelling together. I think that we have a great chance of beating them and that would set us up nicely for the Germany match.”

Ireland's UEFA 2008 qualifying campaigns kick-off on September 2nd in Stuttgart against Germany. The fixture may have a daunting ring about it but Morrison is looking on the positive side about the game.

“We've done well against Germany in the past and there's no reason why we can't get a result out there. Our first objective is to get a win but I'd take a draw if I was offered it. My immediate aim is get into the side first” he said.

Morrison arrived into the Irish camp in good spirits after scoring the only goal of the game for Crystal Palace in Sunday's victory over Leeds United in the English Coca-Cola Championship.

That winner, coupled with the absence of fellow striker and Irish captain Robbie Keane for Wednesday's game, gives Morrison every chance of playing against Holland.

“It was a brilliant feeling to score the winning goal on Sunday,” he said. “It's a hard division to get out of into the Premiership but we've got full points from our three games so far.

“We're the underdogs in the league and it's a bit the same for the Irish team against Holland this week. I'll be thrilled to get a chance on the pitch at Lansdowne to show the manager what I can do.”
