Leon Best was being head hunted by Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington who hoped to make the Republic of Ireland youth striker change countries. Fifa regulations have scuppered his attempt to do this.
Best was born in England but grew up in Dublin until he went back to play in England. He has played for the under-19s but his last international foray came over two years ago.
That set about interest from Northern Ireland boss Worthington with claims that the 21-year-old is also eligible for the North. The rules are that Best would have to have changed countries before his 21st birthday and its not clear how he could have featured for the North in any event unless we are using FIFAS new rule that a player from anywhere in Ireland can represent either country.
Best was 21 last September andhe can now only play for the Republic of Ireland
