Kerr hails 'magnificent' Irish

Kerr, whose side went closest to scoring through Manchester United defender John O'Shea as his 69th minute right-footed effort went inches wide, admitted he had taken a chance by lining up away trips to both Switzerland and France at the start of their Group 4 campaign.

"We did take a chance, but at the fixtures meeting I said I wanted to have a go at them early. I felt we were coming together well and I think the decision was justified tonight," said Kerr (pictured left, walking off with the injured Clinton Morrison five minutes before the break).

"We were magnificent out there, everyone from Shay up to Robbie, and Andy Reid when he came on, did their bit. There was that threat from Henry and Wiltord on the left but I thought our two Stevens - Carr and Finnan - did well on them.

"I felt Roy and Kevin dominated the game too in the middle. We were safe at the back all through."

Racking up a fifth point on the road to Germany 2006, the Irish next face the 135th-world ranked Faroe Islands at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday and Kerr is determined to take one game at a time.

"Overall it was probably a fair result, we're only slightly disppointed," he continued. "But we would have settled for two away draws at the start of the campaign.

"We've got to enjoy tonight - we've worked hard for it. The fans were brilliant. Ourselves and all the staff have worked to get the approach right and the tactical side right so we'll turn our attention to the Faroes' game tomorrow."
