Keane seeks closure from testimonial

The Irishman has previously expressed a distaste for matches of that kind and his decision to accept United's offer to play his current club Celtic has attracted criticism from some fans' groups even though the likely £2.5million receipts from a sell-out crowd are set to be donated to charity.

Keane thought long and hard before agreeing to the game but, after leaving the Red Devils so suddenly following an immense contribution over the previous 12 years, felt it was the right move to play the game.

"I was not sure I was going to have a testimonial game but I thought about it and knew it was a chance to have a sense of closure, and for me and the fans to say our goodbyes," he said in his programme notes for the game.

"I feel it is the right thing to do."

After collecting the Bank of Scotland Premier League title since joining the Hoops, Keane has yet to decide whether he will extend his career into next season by remaining with the Parkhead outfit even though there is a possibility of facing his old club in the Champions League.

"I promised myself before I made any decision I would have a holiday with my family and then do what is right for Celtic," he added.

Manchester United v Celtic live on RTÉ Two from 7.30pm on Tuesday May 9.
