Matt Holland took a knock early on and was substituted as a precaution and a note of goodwill to new employers Charlton Athletic. Gary Doherty was gifted a free header on 32 minutes before Ireland's best chance fell to Keane in the 43rd minute. Unfortunately he miscued from eight yards and had his shot blocked by keeper Mark Schwarzer, but in doing so fell akwardly on his right side and had to be replaced by 'Angy Ant' David Connolly.
