The 24-year-old Dubliner also had the ball in the back of Nigel Martyn’s net, but the effort was ruled out for offside in front of 38,264 at Goodison Park.

Keane clipped over a lovely right wing cross for the French defender to loop his header beyond Martyn and to the Everton net on 53 minutes. It hardly looked like being the game’s only goal as Everton’s Irish winger Kevin Kilbane quickly became a menace down Spurs’ right flank.

Just after his goal, Pamarot was forced to clear the danger as Kilbane threatened to bundle home Leon Osman’s shot which rebounded off a Spurs’ stanchion. The 27-year-old former Sunderland wide man also chested down Alan Stubbs’ free kick into his path, only to fire narrowly wide of Paul Robinson’s goal.

Elsewhere at Carrow Road, Gary Doherty was a peripheral figure as he remained on the Norwich City bench throughout. The Canaries managed a 2-2 draw with Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth to remain second-from-bottom.

Rory Delap and Richard Dunne, who received a recall to the Irish set-up last week, played their parts in a 0-0 draw between third-from-bottom Southampton and mid-table Manchester City.

Dunne, who turned 25 two weekends ago, had a first half header cleared off the line at St Mary’s.
