June rankings see Irish up to fourteenth

Victories over Holland (5th), Jamaica (51st) and the Czech Republic (11th) have pushed the Republic from 15th last month to fourteenth, replicating their positioning of January 2004.

Based on their 2-1 and 1-0 losses respectively, the Czech and Jamaicans have slipped down one place, while Brazil, thanks to their 3-0 win over Argentina, head the standings ahead of France, Ireland's 2006 World Cup Qualifying Group 4 rivals, and Spain.

Since Brian Kerr began his reign last year, the Republic have varied between positions 15 and 13. When the rankings began back in the Charlton days of 1993, the Republic ranked 83rd but a string of impressive results quickly saw them to eighth, an eleven-year high, by December of 1994.

With Brian Kerr due to travel to the upcoming European Championships in Portugal, to run the rule over World Cup opponents France and Switzerland, he will do so knowing that the Swiss are 33 places behind Ireland.

The other members of Group 4 ranks as follows - Israel (58th), Cyprus (102nd) and the Faroe Islands at 134. The Israelis could well be the surprise packets of the campaign but have dropped out of the top 50 since last season.

The Cypriots have fallen down five places in the last month, putting them outside the top 100 for the first time and at their worst ranking ever.
