Stephen Ireland won the young player of the year award at the FAI's annual awards ceremony. The exiled City midfielder beat Aiden McGeady and Shane Long to the prize despite having a tough few months in the Irish set-up. He scored the winners against San Marino and Wales and got another in his last cap away to Slovakia. He withdrew for the squad after false claims about a dead granny and then withdrew from the Stans last games at home.

Alan Quinn was upset about the abuse he got from Sheffield Wednsday fans on Saturday having gone through the youths there and spending nearly 8 years at Hillsborough. He scored for new club Ipswich town and then set up the winner for another Irishman Alan Lee.

Stephen Reid and Robbie Keane are both fitness concerns for Wednsdays match with Brazil. This comes on the back of Andy O'Briens retirement from International football at the weekend. Brazilian pair Kaka and Pato are both out injured and will not play in the game.
