He told the FAI website:
"Lee wasn't going to play in this match. I had a good chat with him and I didn't see the point of him travelling and coming over there to sit around and watch the lads playing.
"Lee understands the situation. I've got to give other players experience in that (midfield) position because if Lee gets injured, we would be left short in that position. That's the reason behind that but Lee will be in squad in September."
Duff will most likely be out until next year but the manager hopes to see Given return for next months crucial away trips in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Meanwhile Carsley will be suprised if he isn't back in the side for the Euro 2008 games.
Charltons Andy Reid and new Wolves recruit Stephen Elliott, who both were injured for the duration of last season make it back into the Irish squad.
Staunton only kept four players who went on the USA tour. Wolves duo Darren Potter and Andy Keogh, Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle, and Sunderlands Daryl Murphy.
