Former Middlesboro midfielder Moore spurned a great chance at the death when set up by Hoolahan but his glancing header was kept out by reserve goalkeeper Gustavo Munua.
Another Depor substitute Pedro Munitis has his side's most clear cut chance on 85 minutes when sliding a low shot narrowly wide of Steve Williams' home goal.
Whilst history-making Shels persisted with a long ball tactic at times, which saw them cough up possession more often than not, they did play the better football and for longer periods throughout. The Spanish side looked off the pace at times, and that's true to form when you consider that the eircom side have played 21 league games so far this summer to Depor's none.
Shels' Stuart Byrne, who did a fine marshalling job on Spanish international Valeron throughout the ninety minutes, had a powerful shot blocked by Jorge Andrade in the seventh minute after a fine passing move.
Two minutes later, former Ireland international Moore almost reached a Hoolahan through ball only for Jose Molina to race quickly off his line to snuff out the danger. In the final minute of the first-half Shelbourne keeper Steve Williams did well to hold a Victor Sanchez long-range shot.
Seconds later Ireland striker Jason Byrne had a wonderful opportunity to put the Irish side in front when he miskicked Owen Heary's pull-back in front of goal. Byrne, playing out of position wide on the right, fluffed his shot when just over the Depor penalty spot and in plenty of space.
A quick turn around for last season's Champions League semi-finalists saw them return to the field in determined form. The next ten minutes was their own as twice Jamie Harris gave the ball away needlessly and Luque and Walter Pandiani were unlucky to not open the scoring.
Victor sent Luque through on Williams only for the left winger to drill his shot low and wide. On 49 minutes Pandiani latched onto Harris' error only for Shelbourne skipper Owen Heary to make a timely block in the area.
Thirty minutes later Moore almost made Depor pay the full retribution as Munua went full length to ensure a shut-out for the visitors.
The return leg of this intriguing is on Tuesday August 24th in the Riazor stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).
