Good News for Newcastle's Irish Defenders

Magpies manager Graeme Souness went public his fears that Carr would need corrective surgery to repair the knee injury that has kept him out of the side since last November.

The 28-year-old subsequently voiced his hope that he would not need to go under the knife – but even he could not have hoped that he would be back in action so soon.

While he is unlikely to be thrown straight into the side for the FA Cup visit of the Sky Blues, Carr could be on the bench at St James’s Park – giving Irish manager Brian Kerr a major boost ahead of the next World Cup qualifier against Israel in eight weeks’ time.

And one man who WILL start, Andy O'Brien has a new contract:
O’Brien had been tipped to leave St James’s Park earlier this month, with Aston Villa heading the chase for the 25-year-old’s signature.

However, an injury to new signing Jean-Alain Boumsong and the failure on the part of Souness to sign either Sylvain Distin or Sammy Kuffour have brought the Irishman back to the forefront of the Scot’s plans.

And after sealing the deal, Souness paid tribute to the former Bradford City man – pointedly praising his professionalism in a week when he dropkicked the disruptive presence of Craig Bellamy out of Tyneside.

Souness said: “He’s thrown down the gauntlet. He’s said ‘Look, I don’t care who you are signing, I’m going to get in your team’, and he’ll be given every opportunity to do that. That’s the attitude I want here.

“There was none of that ‘I’m going to consider my future’ when we signed Jean-Alain Boumsong for a lot of money. It was ‘I’m going to show you what I’m made of, I’m going to show you I’m good enough and should be in the
team.’ That’s what I want from everybody.”
