Given urges Toon to not let guard drop

Given and co take on Steve Bruce's fifth-from-bottom Birmingham in the Barclays Premiership this afternoon (3.00pm), hoping to continue new boss Graeme Souness' good run that has seen them to a high of sixth in the table.

Fellow Irish international Andy O'Brien, if on-the-field at kick-off, will be making his 100th league start for Newcastle.

Given played the first half of Thursday's UEFA Cup first round second leg 5-1 win over Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin (securing a 7-1 aggregate success), and expressed his satisfaction with United's current position of seventh.

"The table does look a lot healthier, but we’ve got to keep building on that," said the Lifford man.

"There’s no point in sitting on the four victories we’ve had.

"We’ve got to keep trying to win games and get up with the big couple at the top.

"It’s a long season and there’s a lot to play for. We’d like to think we’re getting better with each game and hopefully we’ll keep improving over the next few weeks.

"The confidence is high again. Wins breed confidence and the lads are brimming with it. We’re buzzing as a team and looking forward to the games, and that’s the important thing."

"You can look too much, sometimes, into fixtures and stuff," said Given. "You’ve got to just take each game as it comes and try not to keep that sort of thing in your head.

“It just shows, the first four games, we took two points, so you’ve got to be totally focussed on the next game and nothing else."

Souness has included new signing Ronnie Johnsen in his travelling squad for the visit to St Andrews. Given, Steve Carr and O'Brien should all feature from an Irish viewpoint, with Republic skipper Kenny Cunningham and striker Clinton Morrison, who has scored twice in three international appearances this season, included in the City squad.
