Five Newcastle United players in total - the rest being Lee Bowyer, Tony Caig and Laurent Robert, have been laid low by the virus, named conjunctivitis, which has seen their Darsley Park ground shut down.

In a new twist today though, the Premier League have rejected the strickened club's pleas and have scheduled United's Saturday fixture against Middlesborough to go ahead.

A league spokesman said: "On the basis of the present information the game will go ahead. Should any new information come to light we will review it."

Given has confirmed that he is back in training and aims to try and start the opening Barclays Premiership fixture if possible.

Earlier this week manager Bobby Robson described the Donegal net minder as if he had gone twelve rounds with Muhammad Ali. Measures to combat the virus have included players changing in their cars and fans being banned from searching out autographs.
