Geary gets backing from Warnock

Derek Geary the Sheffield United right back has been backed by boss Neil Warnock to ignite his International career when Ireland go to their end of season tour to the USA.

The Dublin born 27 year old former Cherry Orchard defender has been in top form for the Blades this term but has not received a call up from Irish boss Steve Staunton. Warnock feels though it is only a matter of time. He said "Derek has a great record here and if selected to go to America with Ireland, he will not let anyone down."

Ireland will be without regular full backs for the tour and this will be a great chance for Geary to stake a claim for a place within the squad. He joined Sheffield Wednsday from Cherry Orchard in 1997, and made 121 appearances for the club before leaving for Stockport. He was snapped up by Warnock after only 14 appearances for Stockport for £25,000.

Geary was quoted as saying this the last time he was left out of an Ireland squad "I'm really disappointed. This was the first time I thought I had a chance (of making the squad). But I've heard nothing. You start wondering if the manager knows I'm Irish."
