FAI stoke the fires of joint Euro bid

The ambitious new plans were discussed at the yesterday's FAI annual general meeting in Derry, despite the inherent and quite obvious challenges facing the Irish side of the bid.

Firstly, the issue of a stadium has yet to be resolved and the likelihood is that just suitable ground could be offered on this side of the Irish sea, Lansdowne Road.

The FAI know the Scots has three venues in Glasgow alone which would meet the criteria – Hampden Park, Parkhead and Ibrox – and hopes are building that another link up with the Scottish Football Association will come to fruition.

The two nations failed in their attempts to stage the tournament in 2008, losing out to Austria and Switzerland after UEFA deemed their proposal the most impressive out of seven contenders.

But former Baltimore head Rooney is undeterred by past failures and hopes he can persuade the Scots to come on board. He told the FAI’s official website, www.fai.ie: “We are looking at the possibility of staging the tournament.

“We will of course have to formally approach the Scottish FA once more, with only one stadium at our disposal, a revamped Lansdowne Road.”
