The Sunderland striker impressed in Steve Staunton's first game in charge against Sweden on 1 March, but he will now miss the four-day training camp in Portugal and the visit of Chile to Lansdowne Road at the end of the month.

However, he is expected to be fit to return to training in four weeks' time.

Injuries to his back, hamstring, Achilles and ankle restricted Elliott to just 15 league appearances, in which he scored twice, as Sunderland lasted only one year in the top flight.

The 22-year-old's most recent appearance for the Black Cats came in the home defeat by Wigan Athletic on 11 March.
